On the one hand, this is a period restoration project, as a protected structure it required careful and considered restoration of the historic fabric which was extensive.
On the other hand, it is sharp contemporary home, one that needed significant surgical re-modification.
Demolition was excessive, and essential, in order to release the main original block unit from a number of previous extensions that detracted from the restrained facade of the original house.
In their place, a cluster of new contemporary forms are easily read as new additions, sitting subservient to the main body of the original house. The result is a balance of old and new, a symbiotic relationship that is an evolution from the 19th Century into the 21st.
