Wexford Arts Centre

  • Stage: Completed 2022
  • Location: Wexford
  • Client: Wexford County Council
  • Budget: €3m
  • Floor: 500sq.m

The project required making an existing protected structure, a market house dating from the mid 1770’s accessible for all. This required rejuvenation of the existing building and connecting this through to a new extension that integrated with the surrounding natural and historic landscape. Connectivity, functionality, and security have all been improved with restraint and detailed consideration for the original building. The completed works ensure that the building will remain as a focal point for the community, enhance tourism in the immediate area and bring life to the locality and surrounding environment.

The spirit of the project was to restore the original fabric, and introduce a legible contemporary form to sit against this historic structure. The old and new now sit side by side, the common thread being that of a simple balanced elegance in facade treatment across both styles.

A new, welcoming accessible entrance is created which re-orientates the access to the building to face both the public parkland to the side and also the historic town wall.
