A challenge from the outset, we were approached to look at innovative solutions to a narrow and tapering site at an end of terrace red brick Dublin townhouse.
The solution required a shift in the orientation of the internal spaces so as each room was not competing for the best views; we simply organised the new spaces in such a way that the axis of the house was rotated 90 degrees, thereby giving all rooms equal focus between the rear garden, and a new internal courtyard.
The play on different levels throughout the plan is carried onto the rear elevations, where different layers can be peeled away to imbue the external rooms into the interior. The angular external wall line is brought into the very heart of the design, giving a truly unique solution to the client’s spatial problems, and giving a dramatic but perfectly functional design solution, full of dynamism and natural light.
